Field Trip to the California Science Center!!

Get excited students!!!

This year my biology classes will take a field trip to the California Science Center located in Exposition Park, Los Angeles. This museum inspires science learning and engages visitors with the many permanent and changing exhibits located within the center.

The field trip will take place on Saturday, June 8, 2012 and we will be meeting in front of the auditorium at 8:30 am to discuss the rules and schedule for the day. The buses will leave promptly at 9 am so it is crucial that you arrive to school on time. Each student will need to have their parents sign a permission form and, due to budget constraints, will probably have to pay $2-5 depending on how many students decide to go. The money will go toward payment of the school buses.

Here are some of the exhibits that we will get to see:

World of Life: explore the connections between all life forms with a trip down the Life Tunnel; contains five life processes galleried: Energy Factory, Supply Network, Control Center, Defense Line, and Life Source.

Creative World: explore the inventions and environments humans create to meet their needs for communication, transportation, and structures.

Air and Space Exhibits: explore real aerospace artifacts and discover how scientific principles affect aircraft and spacecraft design; includes the new Space Shuttle Endeavor exhibit - get to see a real space shuttle up close!!

 

 

 

Ecosystems: immerse yourself in Earth’s ecosystems, from the simplest to the most complicated, to discover how life on our planet is shaped by its unique geophysical and biological processes; includes 8 zones: extreme, forest, river, island, global, L.A., rot room, family discovery room.

This Week in Biology Class

Monday:
First day of class!! I will introduce myself and go over the class syllabus and class rules/expectations. Then, we will all head over to the bookroom and check out your textbook. This book will be your responsibility for the whole school year and will have to be returned in June.
Homework: review the course website and look over the Course Question.

Tuesday:
Introduction to Biology lecture. You will learn about the the goals of science, how scientists work, and the basics of the scientific method.
Homework: take the quiz found in the Digital Interactives page of the course website to prepare for the material we will be learning in Chapter 1.

Wednesday:
Discussion: What did you think of the quiz? Did you find it helpful? What do you think could be improved?
Lecture: Introduction to cell biology. We will go over the Cell theory and the different types of cells: eukaryotes, prokaryotes, animal, plant, etc.
Homework: start reading Chapter 1 and use Quizlet to create a set of flashcards for all the vocabulary terms found in Chapter 1. The flashcards will be due next Monday.

Thursday:
Continue lecture on cell biology. You will learn about cell structure, organelles, and the functions of the cell and everything inside the cell.
Homework: continue reading Chapter 1 and making your flashcards.

Friday:
Finish lecture on cell biology. You will learn about the cell cycle and mitosis.
Homework: finish reading Chapter 1 and when you are done with your flashcards, email me the link. Go to the course website and look over the popplet found in the Digital Interactives page. You do not have to study the information in the popplet yet since we will be covering that material in Chapter 15, but take note of how the information is presented and organized because you will have to create your own popplet next week.
